Overnight DMZ village stay : History, Culture & DMZ Tour

Overview

Have you ever been curious about what the DMZ is, and what North Korea looks like from the South Korean border? Now’s your chance! We will be going on an overnight trip to a unique village right next to the DMZ! Learn more about the ongoing conflict between North and South Korea by seeing these historic locations and monuments in person.

You can take a peek into the North from an observatory that is almost on the edge of the demarcation zone, only a few km from the border. Visit the last train that used to connect the North and South, the sites of devastating ruins, the shockingly calm landscape of the bloodiest battlefield in the war, and so much more! During our stay, we will experience a mixture of nature and history in Cherwon. You will leave this trip with a whole new perspective about the Korean War and how it affects us today.

To end our day, we will have a delicious dinner and we will also have a bonfire in the evening and roast s’mores!

Our meals will be prepared by the villagers using the local area’s ingredients, including a delicious Korean BBQ dinner. We’ll also learn how to make and decorate Korean rice cakes in a fun cooking class at the village community center.

Sign up now for a one-of-a-kind experience at the DMZ this summer!

  • Stay in a pension house that is just 5 km from the border. You’ll be able to see into North Korea from here, but don’t worry, it is completely safe.
  • Take a scenic and unique walk along the 4 km long trail built along a canyon that was created by volcanic eruptions.
  • Visit the Unification Observatory that overlooks the Iron Triangle Battlefield, North Korean villages, military bunkers and outposts that you can see through binoculars
  • We’ll visit Woljeongri Train Station and the ruins of the “Last Train to North Korea” that used to connect both sides of the Korean Peninsula
  • Examine the Labor Party Building ruins, also known as Nodongdangsa, where the area around it used to be part of Northern Korea in 1946 before the war
  • Eat meals prepared by the villagers using locally-grown ingredients of Cherwon
  • Learn how to make and decorate Korean rice cakes
  • Enjoy the bonfire and roast s’mores at night
  • Take plenty of photos at all these historic and beautiful sites
  • Visit the Goseokjeong Flower field

What to expect

Take in the breathtaking views of the valley and the Goseokbawi Rock that sits in the middle of the Hangtangang River at Goseokjeong Pavilion. Many famous K-Dramas were filmed in this area because of how scenic it is!

Get an amazing and shockingly close view of North Korea at the Unification observatory through binoculars. Try to find the bunkers and outposts from both countries in the hillsides, and observe the North Korean homes in the distance.

Enjoy delicious Korean BBQ prepared by the villagers and other homemade food made from their locally-grown ingredients!

Visit Woljeongri Station, one of the northernmost train stations in Korea. It used to connect both sides of the Korean Peninsula and even reached Moscow, Russia! Now, it is the site of the ruins of the “Last Train to North Korea.”

Walk around the Labor Party Building, also known as Nodongdangsa, where the area around it used to be part of Northern Korea in 1946 before the war. The building has been partially destroyed because of the war, and you can see evidence of bullet holes, bombs, and tank tracks very clearly..

Take in the shockingly serene view of the Baekmagoji battlefield. It was one of the bloodiest battles during the Korean War, and because of how severe it was, the mountain it was fought on lost its original shape. It was said to resemble a white horse (baengma) lying down.

Visit the beautiful flower field of Goseokjeong and enjoy, rest and experience the unique space created through attractive flower species.

Take a scenic and unique walk along the 4 km long trail built along a canyon that was created by volcanic eruptions.

End the day on a sweet note by roasting s’mores over a fire together and having fun through the night.

Learn how to make and decorate traditional Korean rice cakes.
