Gyeongju has been described as Korea’s main history city. It was the capital of the Silla Kingdom. There are many historical and cultural gems in the city. Bulguksa Temple is a must-see for its exquisite paintings, bridges, and pagodas. Seokguram Grotto contains a giant 8th century stone statue of a Buddha carved from granite and looking in the direction of the sea. Shuttle buses can drive you to the grotto from Bulguksa Temple. See more stone pagodas at Bunhwangsa Temple. The pagodas have Buddhist guardians and lions carved into them. Tumuli Park is in the center of town and contains burial mounds of 20 Silla monarchs.
